India's capital Wakes Up to Dangerous Smog After Celebrations

Tuesday brought inhabitants of the planet's dirtiest urban center found themselves exposed to dangerously toxic air that fell into the "alarming" level.

Record-Breaking Air Quality Readings

Multiple areas of the city showed an AQI over 500, which represents 10x the healthy threshold set by the global health authority.

Particular areas, readings of dangerous airborne particles reached peaks of 1800, equating to fifteen to twenty times higher than safe standards.

Pyrotechnics Restrictions and Current Developments

For the past four years, the government had implemented a total prohibition on the sale and use of pyrotechnics during the Festival of Lights due to their significant contribution to the deadly pollution that covers the city as colder weather approaches.

Yet in recent months, the current local leadership petitioned the judicial authority to propose a modification of the ban.

They proposed allowing "green crackers" – previously doubted by environmentalists as being only about 30% less polluting – as a compromise between "tradition and environment".

Legal Verdict and Reality

Much to the frustration of environmental and health advocates, the court agreed to the request, specifying that environmentally conscious fireworks could be set off during limited time windows throughout the Diwali.

During the celebrations, there was considerable flouting of the time restrictions across the capital, with minimal monitoring regarding whether the firecrackers being used were actually the eco-friendly type.

Several recording stations throughout the capital recorded air quality peaking around the night hours to the most severe readings observed during celebrations in at least the past three years.

Cross-Border Consequences

The proliferation of fireworks during the celebrations also triggered a dispute with neighbouring the neighboring country, with representatives in Pakistani the Punjab region partly blaming declining atmospheric conditions in the city of Lahore on contaminants traveling from India following the festivities.

Chronic Pollution Issue

The dangerously high readings of atmospheric toxins in the capital have persisted as a major issue for fifteen-plus years, with the condition continuing to worsen.

During celebratory seasons, the levels of dangerous particles in the environment has been observed to spike to significantly exceeding the worst levels ever measured in Beijing, which was previously considered as the world's most polluted urban center.

Various Pollution Contributors

This crisis in Delhi is caused by a convergence of various sources including transportation pollution, airborne particles, building projects, rubbish burning and pollutants from farm burning in neighbouring states of farming communities.

In these regions, agricultural workers routinely set their fields on fire to expedite field preparation, creating toxic haze that then gets trapped over the city as cooler air arrives.

Public Health and Economic Consequences

Both financial and medical consequences on the approximately 33 million people calling home the metropolitan zone is substantial, according to various research.

The contaminated air results in increased incidence of nervous system, cardiovascular and breathing disorders, and can potentially cause oncological diseases.

Environmental contamination is estimated to be accounting for approximately 10k untimely fatalities annually in the city.
