The beluga known as Jelly Bean’s offspring Bertie is an charming little “playful character”. The whale Orion – called “Onion Ring” – is a large but guardian-like companion. Another whale, Zephyr has “constant motion” and moves like a wiggly creature. Lillooet the beluga is the “most affectionate” with a gentle spirit.

Thirty captive beluga whales in a Canadian entertainment facility have been entangled in a disagreement between a shuttered park, public officials and welfare campaigners.

But those closest to the whales say the impassioned controversy over their future often overlooks the individual traits of the whales who, after spending their lives in enclosed habitats, have been closely studied by the people who see them each day.

After the national authorities disallowed the export of the belugas to a foreign facility, the controversial attraction near the famous falls where they are held stated it would consider to end their lives unless the authorities covers the cost of their survival. Canada’s marine resources official has denied that demand, placing the thirty whales in an ever more uncertain circumstance.

Intelligent Marine Mammals

Experts say that beluga whales’ neuroanatomy, along with their vocal imitation skills, intellectual tasks and communal behavior suggest they are remarkably smart animals – something one caretaker learned first-hand.

Burgess spent several years as a whale caretaker, a role that entailed gaining confidence of the aquatic animals.

“Establishing those connections over time takes a lot of consistency and a lot of love. At the start, they’re very wary of you,” she said. “Over time, you gain shared confidence. And they start being more trusting with you. It’s just so wonderful and gratifying.”

Burgess knew the whales were highly intelligent, but she says she was nevertheless surprised by the nuances and unique traits in their personalities. She cultivated a special affection for two female belugas with opposing natures.

“Eve selected me. Cleo made me earn it,” she said. “Both altered the way I understand relationships.”

Public Concerns and Deteriorating Conditions

Burgess’s relationship with the whales developed against a background of increasing societal concern to their confinement.

During her time at the facility, seven belugas and the park’s single orca, Kiska, succumbed. In all, 19 belugas have died at the park since recent years, a toll which the facility links to natural mortality, but which advocates say indicates the inadequate care in which they were kept.

The facility did not admit visitors to the visitors over the recent season, but the former trainer says she witnessed firsthand consequences of the shutdown. “Structural materials is deteriorating from the pools because they’re degrading and not being maintained. The whales are exploratory and so they take pieces and swim around with pieces in their mouth. It’s upsetting to see.”

The park did not comment to a inquiry, but previously asserted: “The whales … receive far better medical attention and constant supervision than any person in the Britain, or other places.”

Uncertain Future and Proposed Solutions

Burgess was fired from the park in the spring following the death of Eos, an ailing beluga the caretakers had to humanely kill. She said the park believed particulars of the incident were disclosed to the media and she was let go shortly thereafter.

The lack of clarity over the whales’ outcome has left her and other caretakers in despair. She says the facility’s threat to end the lives of its whales is a negotiation tactic and is a “practically unfeasible” undertaking, adding any attempts to humanely kill even a individual beluga would require “considerable personnel”, vehicles and heavy equipment.

“It’s impossible in hell the staff would ever do it,” she said.

Burgess supports calls for the whales to be taken promptly from the park, with its crumbling tanks and reduced personnel.

In recent months, Canada’s government official rejected a proposal to send the whales to an overseas location.

“To approve the request would have meant a continued situation in enclosure and a reversion to public entertainment,” the official stated. “As society, we know that belugas should be in the sea, not in tanks for our amusement. I could not in ethical standing authorize an export that would prolong the treatment these belugas have experienced.”

But the former trainer said the official’s remarks indicate a more general misunderstanding of the circumstances of living conditions for belugas living their whole lives in enclosures.

“The society needs to realize these are whales that have spent their whole lives in confinement and they will need human care for the foreseeable future,” she said. “People just don’t comprehend that it’s not as straightforward as saying ‘end operations’.”

Sanctuary Proposal and Ongoing Debate

As officials struggle to find a resolution, suggestions have surfaced, some of which have questionable practicality. An idea called for the belugas to be released into the open waters of the Arctic – where whales are a key source of sustenance for Indigenous peoples.

A suggested sanctuary in the province of eastern Canada, which has received government approval, has been contentious. The future location, which includes extensive space of protected cove, doesn’t yet exist. Supporters remain positive that it could ultimately represent a permanent resolution for some of the whales.

But, Burgess says, among caretakers she’s discussed with, there is “skepticism there” about what she said is “merely an trial” in the whales’ fate.

Different voices say the idea of a protected habitat indicates a changing attitudes away from zoos and aquariums and could represent a viable plan in the coming months.

The project lead, leader of the sanctuary project, said the location will simulate the mental engagement and diet the whales obtain from caretakers, albeit in a significantly bigger environment. He said after the well-being of whales is completely examined, which could take months|an extended period|
