No fewer than thirteen passengers perish and 98 hurt in train crash in Mexico.

A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the speed and management of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.

The accident happened on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.

“We will thoroughly investigate what caused this accident,” declared the head of state.

The president confirmed that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The leader stated plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.

Key Undertaking of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the previous administration, whose time in office concluded the prior year. This project was intimately linked to his administration's economic agenda for the southeastern region.

Another massive train initiative from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Project Execution and Worries

The construction of both railway systems was overseen by the armed forces, marking a notable increase of its responsibilities in civilian works. They were completed at an rapid pace, surpassing expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that presidency.

However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously raised persistent concerns over operational security.

  • Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This encompasses an previous crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced several non-lethal derailments.

Demands for Audit and Pause

In the wake of the disaster, the leader of a key rival party called for an prompt pause in the building and running of all such projects.

This stoppage was proposed until the completion of a full technical review. The party declared that the tragedy "demands immediate answers."

In reaction, the president maintained that the train had been operating in total compliance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the construction and running of these vital undertakings.
