A recent study suggests that patients who come off popular slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on shed pounds much more quickly than those who end traditional lifestyle programs.
Published data in a major health publication points out that while obese individuals can lose a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the mass returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"People using these drugs must be informed of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain suggests a return to pre-treatment mass within about a year and a half.
Comparing Therapies
The analysis, which looked at 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
The team emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically see a slower creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
The Reason for the Rapid Regain
Doctors suggest the mechanism of the jabs accounts for the amplified weight return.
The injections imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Discontinuation of this medication means appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."
A Lifelong Condition?
The NHS advise the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
Professionals contend that, due to the high risk of relapse, the treatment is often ongoing.
This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "emphasize the persistent nature of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Testimonies
Users who have stopped the medication report a powerful resurgence of appetite.
"It felt as if a trigger flipping and you become starving," said one woman.
This challenge is exacerbated if users have not established lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Widespread Adoption
Recent estimates show that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest being substantial.
- Adoption is more common among females than males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and long-term success relies on combined behavioural support.
