WHO Sounds Concern Over Severe Scarcity of Weight-Loss Injections

Under a tenth of people that would benefit from GLP-1 drugs such as Wegovy are able to get them, states the World Health Organization as it releases its inaugural advice on the medications.

Considering more than one billion individuals worldwide now classified as obese, it is advocating for increased and just access to GLP-1 medication.

Per projections, in excess of 2,000,000,000 could be obese by 2030 if no action is taken.

"The new guidelines acknowledges that excess weight is a long-term condition that can be treated with holistic and continuous treatment," stated its chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

High costs, limited production capacity, and distribution challenges are significant obstacles to universal access to the injections that can help people shift significant body mass, explains the organization.

GLP-1 Therapy Supply Crisis

Even in the present most optimistic outlook, the production of these medications would only suffice for around 100 million people – fewer than 10% of the global need, according to the health organization.

The guideline calls on governments and firms to increase availability, through measures including patent sharing.

Exclusive production rights on the active ingredient – the primary component of Novo Nordisk's Wegovy – is due to expire in multiple countries in 2026.

How Obesity Drugs Work

These medications replicate a body's own hormone to slow digestion, reduce hunger and increase the sense of being full so users eat less.

Patients usually begin shedding pounds after several weeks of commencing the weekly injections.

Research suggests users may regain a significant portion a year later of halting the medication, when their usual hunger return.

Being overweight or obese elevates your likelihood for contracting health problems, such as diabetes, cardiovascular issues, stroke, and specific malignancies.

Obesity affects people in all nations and was responsible for millions of fatalities worldwide in 2024, per the WHO.
